Bull Terrier Inglés
El Bull Terrier o Bull Terrier Inglés es una raza de perro de la familia de los terrier.
Apariencia
El estándar de Bull Terrier es fuerte, musculoso y de pelo corto. Los colores aceptados son el blanco y cualquier otro color distinto del blanco, incluyéndose manchas de otros colores. Son habituales los Bull Terrier tricolores (negro, marrón y blanco, con predominio del negro o el marrón) y los de color blanco puro o con manchas en la cabeza.
La característica más descriptiva del Bull Terrier es la forma ovalada de su cabeza. De perfil se curva hacia abajo desde la parte superior del cráneo hasta el extremo del hocico. La frente es plana de oreja a oreja.
El peso medio de los machos es de 28-30 kg y el de las hembras es de 20-22 kg, mientras que la altura hasta la cruz en los machos es 50-53 cm y en las hembras es 47-50 cm.
Temperamento
Los Bull Terrier son por lo general perros amigables. Su fuerza física es comparable a su inteligencia, y tanto su cuerpo como su mente deben mantenerse activos. Pueden llegar a ser muy obstinados, razón por la cual no son muy indicados para principiantes en la cría de perros. Aunque como raza son muy apacibles, no se debe olvidar que en otros tiempos se criaron como perros de pelea, de manera que reaccionarán si se les desafía, aunque por lo general no serán los primeros en actuar. Son perros muy cariñosos y adoran la compañía, así que no es buena idea dejarlos solos durante mucho tiempo, dado que con sus potentes mandíbulas pueden ocasionar muchos daños si se aburren. Aunque los Bull Terrier son una de las mejores razas para tener junto a niños pequeños, es recomendable vigilarlos.
Historia
El cruce de las razas, ahora extintas, Old English Bulldog y Old English Terrier dió lugar a una nueva raza llamada Bull and Terrier, a finales del siglo XVIII en Gran Bretaña. También aparecen rastros genéticos del Dálmata en el Bull Terrier, concretamente en los lunares que suelen aparecer en la piel de la zona del estómago.
Hacia 1860, el Bull and Terrier se dividió en dos ramas, el Bull Terrier blanco puro y las variedades de color que frecuentaron las peleas de perros hasta que se reconocieron finalmente como raza de perro legítima, llamados Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Aunque la raza surgió a partir de perros de pelea, el Bull Terrier se crió para ser un perro de exposición,mueret y compañía.
Salud
Los Bull Terriers normalmente están libres de enfermedades genéticas, si bien se debe revisar a los cachorros para comprobar que no sufren de sordera, más común en perros de color blanco puro. Otro problema frecuente en muchos Bull Terriers es la tendencia a desarrollar alergias cutáneas.
Los Bull Terriers suelen vivir entre 10 y 14 años, aunque pueden vivir más. La perra más vieja de la que se tiene conocimiento es una australiana llamada "Puppa Trout", que vivió hasta los 17 años.
El pelo de un Bull Terrier es fácil de mantener, pero el cepillado puede mantenerlo en condiciones casi perfectas. También puede ayudar añadir aceite a su comida.
Los Bull Terriers necesitan hacer bastante ejercicio, sin sobreejercitarlo en edad joven, ya que eso puede provocar problemas musculares. Además, la raza es conocida por ser muy glotones, por lo que debe dosificarse en lo que a comida y ejecicio se refiere.
Problemas frecuentes: sordera, hernia umbilical y acné. Los Bull Terriers también pueden sufrir comportamientos obsesivo-compulsivos, como perseguirse el rabo, automutilación y lamerse de forma obsesiva.
